The Canary Islands Offers A Warm Welcome to LGBTQ+ Weddings
There’s a warm welcome for all in the culturally liberated Canary Islands. In fact, you’ll find a live and let live vibe running though Spain. LGBTQ+ culture is prevalent wherever you look, from the entertainment industry to politics – and this refreshing open-mindedness extends to the Canaries. Same-sex marriage and same-sex adoption rights were legalised back in 2005 and discrimination is not just frowned upon, its prohibited. Be it the work, rest or play, the LGBTQ+ community has been wholeheartedly received by the majority of Canary islanders. With such positivity pulsing, it’s no surprise that the Canaries have become hugely popular with LGBTQ+ tourists and same sex couples looking to tie the knot. Same-sex marriages are not just legal here, they are very much embraced!
The Rules Around Getting Wed in The Canaries
Spanish Law asserts: “Marriage will have the same requirements and results when the two people entering into the contract are of the same sex or of different sexes.” So, basically the same rules apply whatever your predilection! A Spanish citizen can marry a non-Spanish citizen – but one of you must have legal residency of two years, and must be registered within the municipality. Two non-Spanish citizens can marry providing both have legal residency. If you are non-Spanish citizens you can still enjoy a religious or non-denomination blessing in the Canaries, you just need to carry out the legal aspect of your marriage in your own country before-hand.
