Meet Rosa Garrido
The Spanish Photographer who captures each memory of your wedding with art and sensitivity
Rosa Garrido, thank you for granting me this interview, I found you on Instagram and I began to follow you in awe of the incredible images that you have posted on the network. Every week I looked for your new images, in love with your work and to my surprise among your images. I see photos of weddings in the Canary Islands and even of LGBT couples. I immediately think how great it would be, for you to photograph a wedding organised by me. My couples would love you.
Nervously I sent you a message and after a few days we were talking on the phone. It was an honour that you dedicated that time to me in your busy schedule. In addition, realising that despite your great fame and talent you are an open person, down to earth, honest and a great ally of the LGBT community. What a great pleasure it is to conduct this interview.
I have always liked taking photographs, but it was never my main focus; I liked fashion and that’s how I started. Over time, I realized that I enjoyed telling stories with my camera more than being tucked between the spotlights and fabrics. I feel that I was made to create images with details and the appropriate lighting, to compose the photography that I feel and want to transmit, in addition to showing all the emotion of the moment.
-How did you start photographing weddings?
It was almost accidental, when some friends called me to do their wedding story, because they knew my career as a documentary and fashion photographer, and it was then, at that moment, when I realized that I enjoyed narrating more with my camera the intimate and real emotions, in such an important framework as the union of two people.
It was not an easy decision and I knew that the change in the trajectory of my work was risky, but I never regretted it, I was sure that I should focus on what I really like and what I enjoy the most.
-How would you define your work?
A wedding in itself imposes with such speed, that the marking of the times is only available to those who know how to deal with all improvisations. No two weddings are the same; It is a type of event whose nature always proposes immediate solutions, combining fundamental resources that are decided in seconds: the framing, the lighting, its location or the distance. For this reason, I consider that my work is faithful to a narrative, emotional and cinematographic style.
-What are your references?
My passion for cinema and ballet has brought me closer to a very iconic type of photography. I am a great lover of cinema, which is still 24 frames per second. Each frame is a shot that, together with the others, gives movement to the image, as if it were a dance. In cinema my references are: Wes Anderson (Grand Budapest Hotel), Stanley Kubrick (The Shining / A Clockwork Orange), Orson Wells (Citizen Kane) …
In photography I am a lover of Nirhal Pattel, Rodney Smith, Bill Brandt (Magnum), Fan Ho, Robert Freeman, Robert Doisneau, Cartier Bresson, Herry Benson, Eric Meola, Ted Gore in landscapes. Duane Michals an artist in balance between photography and poetry. And regarding painting I am in love with Caravaggio, Velazquez, Turner, Vermeer, Georges de la Tour, Nikolai Ge, Francesco Hayez, Delacroix…
My maxim: Learn from others. If you want to be a creative person, then share with others, develop collaborative alliances. Your creativity increases when you learn from other people and when you share your knowledge with others. Therefore, do not live wisdom from individualism, but from emotional generosity.
-What do you consider to be your strengths as a professional?
Be true to my style, creativity, hard work and experience
-We must ask you about the “Rising Stars Wedding Photography 2019“, where you were nominated for the best wedding photographer of the year. What did this award mean to you?
I am extremely happy to have been named one of the 30 Rising Stars of Wedding Photography for 2019 and to represent my beloved country, Spain. Knowing that my work is recognised amongst so many talented photographers around the world is overwhelming and a dream come true. To date, only five Spanish photographers have been named since the beginning of this renowned award, so being one of them as well as being the first woman is truly an honour.
-What meaning do these awards have for you and your professional career?
During these years, I have always found in this field many of my favourite photographers and sources of inspiration, so being on this list is a dream come true; photography is my passion, anyone who knows me knows how much I enjoy my work, it is my passion and therefore is reflected in the results.
Regarding what it means for my career, this nomination has been an extraordinary leap, but every day I have to start again and demand more of myself, because in this profession, without losing your essence, you never stop learning.
-How do you establish a close relationship with couples during such an intimate and significant moment in their lives?
I believe that there is a wedding photographer for each couple and I believe in connection, in the feeling of the first meeting; That is why I am convinced that the most recommendable thing is to get to know each other in advance and resolve all your doubts and concerns together, either in person, by phone or videoconference.
On the other hand, I would like to highlight the importance of pre-wedding stories. A great and relaxed way to establish a connection with the bride and groom before the ceremony is to propose a couples session. A type of bonding that comes to be a way of creating ties, understanding my way of working, letting go of those nerves and later seeing the results.
-What advice would you give to those who plan to dedicate themselves to wedding photography?
Let your passion have infinite possibilities, never stop learning and above all share, that is the secret.
-In addition to wedding photos, do you do photographic work in other areas?
Not at all, there are not enough hours in the day, and I am totally focused on wedding photography.
-Are you one of those people who in their spare time leaves the camera at home or one of those who takes it everywhere?
Nowadays it is not necessary, because you can use your phone if you want to experiment with a situation, however, I prefer to dedicate as much time as possible to my family life and enjoy it as much as I do with my work.
-How are the dynamics on the wedding day? Do you work alone, or do you have a team?
My stories do not have a set time and they start with the preparations until the dancing begins, and then for a good while later. I love the photos of the party. I always work alone, I don’t think that more than one photographer is necessary to create a story; it is just a matter of organising, being agile and keeping an eye on everything that happens.
-Working in so many special weddings you will have millions of anecdotes. Could you tell us a special moment that you have lived working in a wedding?
There were some boys in Salamanca who hired an entire castle for themselves and their guests for four days. I really enjoyed this beautiful and picturesque setting and environment; I arrived a day before the event, and this sweet couple welcomed me warmly and immediately. They integrated me as one more guest to be part of this great celebration in which there was no lack of games, laughter and a multitude of emotions.
-Why do you think couples should hire a professional photographer and not an amateur?
Hiring a professional wedding photographer is an investment and a full guarantee of tranquillity for the couple; All of this is to remember and to be remembered, not to have any bad surprises.
-On your website we can see that you have photographed LGBT weddings, tell us what moves you and what experiences you have at these weddings.
They are more than gratifying, I love to photograph a wedding without traditions and rules; I love that authenticity and freedom, that’s what makes these celebrations so unique and beautiful. With a cry of yes to love, with illusion, with pride, without small print, without haste, without buts or measures. It is easy to understand, it is simple, it is beautiful, it is incredible, it is just love.
-We have seen that you work around the world … Do you have the availability to go anywhere your clients demand?
Of course, I love to travel, meet new people and experience new customs, it is very enriching.
-Finally, tell us where in the world you have made the most impressive wedding stories.
It would be difficult to specify one, but I always have very good memories of New York and I love Morocco.
